A profiled sheeting garage: wall calculation and why the pitch eats your headroom

Short answer. A 6.0 × 3.5 m garage 2.5 m tall takes 15 sheets of T10 for the walls (43.31 m², UAH 8,229) and 7 sheets of T57 for a mono-pitch roof (23.65 m², UAH 6,079). But the two things that decide the outcome are not arithmetic: the roof pitch eats the height of the back wall, and an uninsulated steel garage condenses water onto the car in winter.

Walls: count the whole perimeter, not wall by wall

Wall sheets run vertically, so you count linear metres of perimeter, not area. The perimeter is 2 × (6.0 + 3.5) = 19.0 m. A 2.5 m door opening comes off that length, leaving 16.5 m of solid wall.

The difference is three sheets, UAH 1,646, or 20%. It comes from rounding each wall up separately and throwing away four remainders. Counted around the perimeter, the offcut from the last sheet of one wall becomes the first strip of the next.

One condition: the sheet has to be rolled to the wall height, otherwise vertical waste is added to horizontal waste. We roll to size, so there is no vertical waste at all.

The door opening does not save steel

It looks logical: a 2.5 × 2.2 m door is 5.5 m², subtract it from the area. It does not work that way. Sheets are cut vertically, and above the door there is still a 2.5 × 0.3 m strip that has to be covered. It gets cut from offcuts — which is exactly why on a garage the offcuts should be kept until the job is finished, not thrown out after the walls.

We do not make or sell the doors themselves. Sheet to clad the leaves, yes; a door as a product, no.

The pitch eats the back wall

A garage is almost always mono-pitch falling to the back, so that water does not pour on you as you open the door. But the front wall is fixed by the door: a 2.2 m opening plus a lintel, so about 2.4 m. From there every degree of pitch is subtracted from the back wall over a 3.5 m span.

The conclusion is rarely stated plainly: on a garage the load-bearing T57 is not a luxury, it is how you keep the height inside. It is the only profile that allows 6°, and at 6° the back wall stays 2.03 m — you can still stand there and hang shelves. At 12° it is 1.66 m and the back of the garage becomes a store for wheels.

The slope length barely moves: 3.52 m at 6° against 3.62 m at 15°. The steel does not get more expensive — only the convenience does. The trigonometry is in the mono-pitch roof article.

The roof: 7 sheets

At 6° the slope is 3.52 m long and 6.0 m wide along the eaves. T57 has a working width of 960 mm, so 6,000 ÷ 960 = 6.25 → 7 sheets. That is 23.65 m², about UAH 6,079. The order of assembly is in the roof installation article.

Condensation: what you learn in the first winter

The car comes in wet — snow, water off the arches, heat off the engine. Warm damp air inside, sub-zero outside. The dew point lands on the inner face of the sheet and water condenses directly over the bonnet.

What does not help: thicker steel. 0.50 mm condenses exactly as 0.45 does — the thermal conductivity of steel does not care about a tenth of a millimetre.

What helps: thermal and acoustic insulation under the sheet, plus cross ventilation — vents low on one wall and high on the opposite one. Without ventilation the insulation simply moves the condensation off the steel and onto itself.

Step 1. Work out the perimeter less the door

Perimeter in linear metres minus the opening width. Plus the wall height — that is the sheet length.

Step 2. Set the pitch from the door height

Use the table above: what is left for the back wall, and which profile that allows.

FAQ

Is T10 acceptable on garage walls? Yes, it is a wall profile and it works on a continuous frame. T20f is chosen when the studs are spaced further apart.

Will a 6° mono-pitch roof take snow? That is a question for the battens and the local snow load, not for the pitch. Pitch only governs how tight the lap is — batten calculation is in a separate article.

How is this different from a shed calculation? A shed has no full-height opening and no requirement on internal height. Compare in the shed article.

Will rain be loud? Yes, as on any uninsulated metal. Steel thickness is irrelevant; only a layer under the sheet helps.
